Day 11: A Test Run.

This morning gave me a hint of what traveling on this eating plan will be like. Verdict? Not too bad. I did struggle to sleep through the night, but that is normal for me in a new place. The hotel had a continental breakfast with a ton of bread goods - but also eggs. I brought my own cereal, milk and fruit - so I had a really complete and filling breakfast to get me going for a fun filled day with the kids. I also prepared a smoothie for today before I left so I would have a healthy option for a snack while we were out and about.

As I have mentioned before eating with so many restrictions takes time and planning. I really dreaded this when I first started, but so far it's not so difficult. It does require more time packing and preparing before I leave, but saves time when I am out and about. I don't have to search for a place where I can eat. And if there is one thing yesterday's headache taught me - it is to eat regularly and eat foods on my plan. So, ultimately it is more time like I dreaded, I just don't mind spending that extra time like I thought I would.

Today was a marathon for me and my family and I was completely surprised to be the only one still ready to go for the last stretch of the day. My husband and I went to a lecture about sustainable living and she made a point that will forever stick with me. She asked us if we living a sustainable internal life. Can you sustain your current lifestyle indefinitely? For many, including myself, the answer is no. What a revelation.

She then went on to talk about how this relates to our larger community, and even related it to the shift taking place in attitudes towards food. There is a growing need for people to feel connected the food that sustains them. To quote her, "More and more people are wanting to engage the things that allow us to live." As a culture we have been so far removed from where our food is coming from that there are children who literally do not know that french fries come from potatoes. The implications this cultural disconnect from food sources has on our overall health and wellbeing - as I am experiencing now - is scary.

While the lecture was motivating and she did point out some facts that were pretty alarming. It was mostly hopeful and gave me more reason to be grateful for the change taking place in my life. She helped me understand that I am not alone in this journey and that while the current goal is health, the ultimate goal is a sustainable life, and on this diet of real, whole foods I know I am moving in the that direction.
